STF Ethnography: focus group discussion @Final Conference

Hi Future Spotters!

I am a part of the research team in the STF project and I am doing online ethnography. To give a simple explanation, I analyze STF online forums and look what people talk, how they talk, why they talk, what they do and who they are.

However, as Future Spotters meet, talk, interact, collaborate and communicate with each other offline as well as on line, I am organizing an off-line focus group discussion where we can discuss my preliminary findings.

What will we talk about?

We will discuss main themes and topics that you are discussing online on STF groups. You don’t need to prepare anything, just be ready to express your opinion, your arguments and maybe give a supporting story or two.

When?

During the conference in June 24-26

How long?

Depends on the quality of the discussion, but usually focus groups take 1-2 hours.

Who?

You and others, from Armenia, Egypt and Georgia. I need 6-12 participants who will be willing to express their opinions and share their stories connected to the topic.

Language?

English is preferred. However, if you feel that you have a lot to say but don’t know how to express it in English, come nevertheless. Together we will solve this problem.

Procedures?

All discussion will be recorded for future analysis. However, your name and anything that can jeopardize your privacy will be excluded from final report. Only some social data, such as age, your country of origin or residence will be used for descriptive purposes

Date: 2014-06-23 20:00:00 - 2014-06-26 20:00:00, Asia/Tbilisi Time.

Looks good to me

Hi Inga, question: do you also need a 45min-1h plenary to present preliminary findings to everyone in the room? I think this could be of interest for more than 10 people in the focus group, the client (UNDP) included…

@Alberto knows that’s how we did it at Living on the Edge conference at the Council of Europe. If not, it would mean that we can have the conversation on the findings here online when the drafts and final report come out. What do you guys think?

Presentation is definitely happening

Yes, I will definitely prepare a presentation for general audience as well. That was the original plan, right? To present it in the conference, get feedback etc. Focus group is just an additional way of getting more data. I just did not get to creating an event for it, which is what I am doing right now.

this is what Alberto is talking about now:
