Living On The Edge (#LOTE4) is a gathering of the Edgeryders community. The physical gathering took place on 23-26 October 2014 at the unMonastery, one of many projects to emerge from the community. We chose it because it is a spectacular place, and because is was very relevant to this years theme

This group contains all the documentation from Lote4. Feel free to browse through the below (posts, wikis) or alternatively, check out the Blog for curated insights.

Call for Fuckup Bios! Just you and the nonjudging Internet #lote5

Noemi's picture

We figured there’s no way we get to talk about society and industry fuckups at Living on the Edge: Fail unFail, our upcoming event, without getting to know our own individual failures first. And instead of an onsite icebreaker where we get on a frightening stage talking about our own fuckups, why not dig into that early and get it out of the way? We do it online, well ahead, massively and with light hearts.

About this year's theme | Why we care about failure

“Fail. Fail again. Fail better!” Samuel Beckett

Everyone loves success stories, but look around you: failure is everywhere. Projects fail to deliver, collaborations collapse, systems fail to improve, organisations screw up, people blunder, policies fall short.

How do you survive failures in your work?

New to the Edgeryders or LOTE scene and want to understand how we work? Maybe you participated in previous events but don't feel you have a "birds eye" view of how we build this? This task is an opportunity to learn while contributing to making LOTE5 the best one so far!

Reporting from Molenbeek

KiraVde's picture

If you're looking for speculations on why Molenbeek is such a hotbed for terrorism, read no further, this post is not for you. This is the complementary information to the news that you've been reading: the daily life, the vibe, the ways that Edgeryders can get involved in this municipilaty being portrayed (not entirely unfairly) as being rich in poverty and crime.

Lessons from LOTE4 and call for the next team

After last week's call I was asked to write about my experience from LOTE4. By a brave decision of Edgeryders I was chosen to go to Italy in late September to spend there a few weeks organising the event on the spot. It was an extraordinary experience. I was already involved in the Baltic Edge project some time ago, in early 2013, then some other projects took over, and finally I was able to be back to the community and offer my time to work for a few months.

How do we create a non-evil IoT? an idea for an unConf

This post appeared  on the iilab blog in November. After reading the post, Bez commented that we should have a non-evil IoT unConference. I think it's a great idea - maybe we could see if we could host it at Casa Jasmina? I recently also came accross the hi:project, who seem to dance to the same vibe. It'd be great to hear thoughts/expressions of interest. Also, I'm taking Open Droplet to Hack the Earth at Calafou where I'm hoping I might find some more non-evil IoT enthusiasts :)

Here's the post:

Money, society and gaps – an introvert’s view: or reflections from the Edge of LOTE4

Hey everyone, I finally got this post together discussing some of my thoughts after LOTE4 and some other discussions and experiences. I really enjoyed LOTE4 and meeting everyone. It's a repost from my blog.

I did a lot of being in large groups last year - in groups within which the members share the belief - and I think we are right here - that communities are the way we will move the world forward.

Hi everyone,

Thank you so much for a beautiful lote. I am so happy we finally managed to find the time to really meet one another and have an open conversation(s) about many questions and issues. Including where we want to take things looking forward together.

Establish an (informal) partnership with TRM Art on #LOTE4

There is a TV channel in Matera completely dedicated to art, culture and MT2019. Go talk to them, please: @RitaO can make the connection. You can simply walk to their office, tell them about LOTE4 (and Fabrizio, Amelia, Robin etc.) and ask them would they like to do something together on that. Offer to help them with liaison. Thanks!

[Lote4 tickets] Put together a small social media team in Italian

Hello folks!

Ever since the twitterstorm we haven't been seeing a lot of action in Italian or coming from the community in Matera. I suggest we start translating key headlines and content about Lote4 into social shares for Italy and and spread these daily so we can support Nico as he tries to engage the community or at least create more buzz. I offer to send them out daily to this crew.

Invitations to Lote4_templates

Hi all,

At last week's community call we agreed the communication team would come up with templates to make it easier for people to reach out to their networks, follow up on the Case Study Adventure with specific info about the conference etc.

Notes from Lote4 session on the future of disaster response in hands of stewards

Transferring documentation from Lote4 hackpad, thanks to everyone who attended and helped by taking notes. The full session description is here.

Geeks without bounds

Burners without borders: It's people "hardened" for infrastructure-scarce situations by the Burning Man festival, now going to disaster struck areas for disaster response.

Ruminations on #lote4 - Maria, Nadia, Jeff, Dorotea, Katalin

Everything is going to be a mistake. You fall into stuff that you weren't looking for. Everyone's head is full of ideas of what the #LOTE4 is, but it's in the things we say and do. Someone needs to make sense of what is there, reading and finding the invisible story that's being written. Connecting the dots we sum up our thoughts.

Notes from the #lote4 session on unMonastery in a Box
