Economists, politicians and business leaders, it seems, have given up on trying to imagine completely different economic systems. But we have not. 

And neither has a small group of brainy, visionary science fiction authors: Cory Doctorow (peer production and abundance in _Walkaway_ ), Bruce Sterling (nomads + cheap open source technology + reputation servers in _Distraction_ ), Neal Stephenson (phyla in _The Diamond Age_ ), Peter Watts (tons of insights from biology in the _Rifters_ trilogy), and others. 

We organize a meeting of minds where we can learn from each other what future economies might look like. And maybe even how we can help bring them into the world.

We are on the lookout for "viable mutants": economic models different from your usual late-stage capitalism, that can nevertheless survive and thrive in a late-stage capitalist economy. We wish to study them, and understand if they can be building blocks for a more humane economy.

Hi, Alberto- I absolutely agree. Of course the statistical studies would be by economists and/or sociologists; the ethnography by anthropologists. This is a completely artificial distinction, but it is one more of the kinds of distinctions which impede our ability to understand the world. The best study of a population with respect to most questions is to do the statistical study to get overall information about the structure of the population, and then to dive in to the why and how it works using ethnographies. Neither gives as good a view as both together. It is not hard to suppose that an ethnography can expose that two correlated phenomena that at first seemed to have a flow of causation from A to B actually have causation that flows from B to A, or both are caused by C, or there is no "cause" as such because actually the phenomenon could not exist without the interaction of A and B.This is base-level obvious analysis, but it is almost always ignored by major researchers, and so a good deal of research is bunk as a result.

So YES! ETHNOGRAPHIES!

Hey Philip, great point, but... are you sure it should go here? This is just the configuration file for the future new website of the lab. I propose to attach it to a proper discussion topic in the Lab's space, or even to start a new one with it. Any preference?

@owen I have entered code for the background image, but I cannot see it... What am I doing wrong? 

(Note that there still is an issue with the opacity of the background image. The opacity parameter currently controls the entire block, not just the background image. I think there is a way to control it with some `<div>` or other.

The best solution to this would be to change the image opacity itself - before uploading.

CSS opacity affects all child divs: changing the header opacity on the parent will change everything inside the container, including text, buttons etc.

The only way around this would be to set an absolute positioned image and change the opacity of that. But in the template it's a *backgroundImage* property on the header div - not an < img > in the template.

The CSS code:

You need to include a closing quote mark at the end of the url - without it, the url will not be recognised.
