BBQ on the site 24 August!

Hi @reeflings !

For some time now, I have been threatening to organise a BBQ on the site during this summer. My house move from hell kind of got in the way a bit, but there’s still time to make this happen.

I know that many people will be coming and going from Brussels during August, but I hope that there will be one Saturday or Sunday where there are enough of us around to have a joyous time in the sun together, on the site of our future community

I imagine food, drinks, kids running around, games and general shenanigans. It’ll take a bit of logistic intelligence, but we can work out the details later. For now, here’s a poll to see if we can find a suitable date:

  • Saturday 16 August
  • Sunday 17 August
  • Saturday 23 August
  • Sunday 24 August
  • Saturday 30 August
  • Sunday 31 August
  • I can’t make any of those dates

On August 23-24, there’s the Plazey festival at Parc Elisabeth. Could be nice to go there after the bbq! Plazey | Koekelberg

Le 24 août j’ai prévu de vous faire visiter les alentours du miroir pour vous y faire découvrir les lieux sympathiques: magasins, cafés. librairies…
Serait-ce une bonne idée de la combiner avec le BBQ?

The 24th of august I’ve planned to organize a surroundings visit of nices places around the Miroir…
Wouldn’t it be a good idea to combine with the BBQ?

I think it could be a good thing to combine Chantale  I imagine that we’ll do the BBQ at about 2pm, so plenty of time to do that beforehand.

At the moment, the 24th is in the lead, but it’s a tight race and other dates are still fighting hard to win…

For the ease of scheduling, shall we book a save-the-date for the 24th at 2 pm? (I’ll put it on the calendar like that for now, just to make sure it doesn’t get overbooked by accident)

Yes, looks like the poll has spoken clearly enough

@Chantale - I’ve been told that you had quite a lot of things planned for your visit/walk around Jette. Perhaps it would be a good idea to do your tour in two sessions, so that you don’t feel stressed for time on the 24th. Just a suggestion… you’re the boss for that thing

I’m planning on doing most of the organising for this event after I get back on 11 August. However, there might be one thing that should be thought of more in advance, which is some sort of portable toilet hire. Normally I would ask @reef-logistics, but I think that team is empty at the moment… could any @reeflings look into this?

@ChrisM
For the 24th, I ve only planned a visit of the surroundings of the miroir to show nice places to go, library, restaurants…
The visit of the parcs…and an icecream at Giotto is forseen the 31st of August.
So for the ones who are interested , I propose to meet at 12:45 am in front of The reef.

Great plans to look forward to!

To make sure everybody gets the message, I would suggest you make a post closer to the date, tagging all reeflings.
During our last team community life meeting, we decided one of us would help facilitating the weekend events each month, and I’m on duty for August, so I’ll support wherever is needed, don’t hesitate to reach out!

For the toilets, in the absence of a team logisitcs, I can send some emails if somebody is happy to follow up while we are gone.
A few questions though:

  • how many do we think we are going to be? This is just for reeflings right?
  • do we need water bassins? Maybe I can ask for the price?
  • Are we ok if I also explore dry toilets?
  • Shall I enquire about a mid-term solution, like keeping it on site until the end of october?

There’s 17 adults on the poll above, with at least 5-6 kids between them. Might be a few more EMs and AMs by then as well…

Some hire toilets come with a wash basin. If not, I think we can create a handwashing area ourselves…

The more environmentally friendly the better, in my humble opinion

I’m not sure it’ll be worth the expense, but no harm in asking. We thought we would all spend a lot of time on the site this summer, but it hasn’t really turned out that way. If anyone has plans to organise other events on the site in Jette, perhaps now would be the time to say.

On a related note, we most of the related expenses will be covered by the group, but the toilet could possibly come out of the Reef budget…or not. Perhaps someone more fiscally minded can weigh in on that…

So I sent some emails and the result is that it is very expensive for a dry toilet: it’s more or less 720 for transport/setting up/putting down + 85 a day or 350 euros/w …

For the other types:

  • WC loc: 150 euros without flush, 175 with flush or 210 with a sink (for 250 uses, so the duration doesn’t matter from what I understand?); that’s not including transport, I’ve enquired about that as well.
  • Dixit : 175 euros all included, and for long term (min 5 weeks) : + 36euros/week (and that includes cleaning). But I’m not clear whether they would need to be on the pavement maybe, I’ve asked for clarifications

Let’s see what they come back with, but so far, how do we feel about that? If we are 20, and we each put 10 euros, that’s a budget of 200euros, so I guess that would be doable?
An alternative is we could see if we can make a deal with the bar at the next corner? But that might be a bit much if everybody comes twice during the day…

What are people’s feeling about this?

Hi Sarah,
As far as the bar is concerned, what do you thing about negociating to pay one euro/ personne when using their toilet

I would also go for the bar at the corner. Last time it was a good opportunity for a couple of small chats.

1 euro per person may get a bit tedious I’m afraid. I would rather maybe offer them 30 euro or so. Just a thought though.

Hi @reeflings !

The day of the BBQ on the site is fast approaching, so time to get our organising hats on

On the Sunday, I will get to the site at about 11.30ish. We will aim to cook at about 2ish, so have a late brunch, bring snacks or both. At this point, I’m not planning for being there after dark, and therefore not thinking about things like light, firewood, etc…

On Saturday afternoon, I would like to go to the site and set a few things up, as well as take things like chairs and water. For this it would be good to have a couple of people to help, and for one of those people to have access to a car. Don’t think we need a poll for that, so let me know below or in a private message if you can help that afternoon, and if you have a car available for the job.

There is already a plastic table and six chairs at the site (although these will need to be cleaned). It’s unlikely we’ll have enough table space to sit everyone at one time, but if anyone has fold-up tables or camping tables, it would be great to bring them on the Sunday or for us to pick them up from you on the Saturday. Same for chairs, as we will need another 15-20. I have 5 fold-up chairs and 2 sun loungers (he said optimistically). Again, if you can bring some on the day or if it’s possible to pick some up from you on the Saturday, wonderful. I’m going to share a link to an Excel sheet below for knowing who has what to offer…

For the actual cooking side of things, we will need either 4-5 small portable BBQs, or some big pieces of metal grill and some bricks. Probably the former, but I’ll put the possibility of the latter on the aforementioned Excel sheet. We will also need a few bags of coal, which I will pick up on Saturday. There shouldn’t be too many shared expenses like this, and we can sort them out with a Tricount at the end of the weekend.

We will need a lot of water, to wash hands and stay hydrated. I have a couple of 10 litre containers, and hopefully others have something like this as well. They will be heavy, so ideally this is also the sort of thing that we can get to the site on the Saturday with a car.

For the food and drink, everyone should bring something to put on the BBQ, something to drink, and something extra (e.g. salad, bread, dips). It should become clear from the Excel sheet if we have any holes in the culinary planning. Obviously bring things you like to eat and drink, but also to share, and please keep in mind that there are plenty of vegetarians in the group, a couple of gluten-frees and the odd vegan

I have a camping cool box that we can fill with ice to keep drinks cold… it would be good to have a few more. Once again, you can indicate if you have something like this on the Excel sheet that I keep threatening to post a link for, but am not quite emotionally ready to do.

I’m not a massive fan of paper plates and plastic cups, so my suggestion is that you bring a plate, knife, fork and glass/cup for each member of your household who will be there.

For the toilet situation, the cost of a portable one is out of proportion to our need. I agree with Lee and Chantale that we ask one of the local bars to use their toilet and offer them 50 euros for the day. That’s less than 2.50 per person, and I think is a reasonable amount for both sides. Feel free to disagree below.

Finally, the weather forecast looks reasonable for the 24th, but obviously we’ll have to be realistic if that changes in a negative way

I think that’s everything for now. I won’t have internet connection over the weekend, so I will reconnect with this thread on Monday and move forward from there…

There is a poll where you can indicate your attendance in the post linked below. Not mandatory of course, but probably nice to know how many people to expect, whether to wait for people who are late etc.
