Event program: Resilient Livelihoods in the aftermatch of Covid19.
A 2hr process of online activities that accelerates offline activities.
This event follows a format designed to gather together people who deploy policies, infrastructures, tools, business activity and community projects that can form an essential support system for build and sustaining livelihoods in times of crisis.
Discussion
The EdgeRyders events process begins when an idea or solution is posted on the platform, sparking discussion among community members. Some join in, actively listening, asking questions or giving thoughtful responses. (This is a safe place and not for debating opinions or speaking for others.)
The discussion begins with first hand accounts of attempts taken to solve societal issues and moves to navigating the personal challenges experienced by members. Nuances and the various different contexts surrounding these challenges begins to show.
Information analysis
Next open source technology is used to make connections between topics being discussed, the people discussing them, places, projects, solutions and struggles. When we put this together, patterns start to emerge that help join these ideas and people to each other and to other information, skill and resources.
By the end of the process, our community members have gained a richer knowledge and understanding of the issue they wish to tackle and have a blueprint to put their idea into action.

The event program is built with, by and for participants. Participants suggest a topic for a session or webinar when they fill in the event registration form. Good for everyone: The more the event reflects the interests of participants, the better the program becomes. Good for you: When you propose a session to the program, we then go out and invite people who are also interested and knowledgeable about the topic. Which means you get to meet more of the right people who can support your work.

Yes there is a search for “localism” within the food industry and some niche food entrepreneurs are being able to stay afloat. But is this something that is impactful on improving resilience on a societal level - will it be able to feed the whole table? Is their model based on time, higher quality & more involvement scale-able to the whole society? And how to improve the situation while still staying healthy as food businesses? The context in which we putting this topic (eg. SMEs world. How they are impacted by the virus in the world? What technological solution they tried? What’s the trend? Are there interesting success stories?
Session on endangered researchers and precarity in higher education. We bring together knowledge workers and policy makers in higher education, also allying with unions and rights defenders, with their histories of mobility, migration and refuge. We would like to discuss and reflect on the intersection between precarious labour conditions and the neoliberal surge on higher education in the last two decades. We would like to exchange experiences and knowledges over struggles for academic freedoms and labour conditions in different contexts. We would like to take the opportunity to learn, exchange and collaborate with/through the framework of critical learning, decent labor and networks of sharing and caring. Sicily’s economy and society have long been crippled by high unemployment, inefficient public services, corruption and organized crime. Yet, over the past ten years or so, a small cohort of about 120 enterprises in Messina, working closely together, have managed to build a solid, long-termist, fair, human-centric economy – and achieve stability and prosperity in the process. They call themselves “the Messina advanced cluster”. To get where they are now, they had to re-invent a lot of economic concepts. The familiar ones (“maximizing shareholder value”, “correct market failures” etc.) were simply not working out for Sicily, and for their goals. So, as they re-built their local economy, they developed their own economic thinking, with concepts such as “relational goods”, “stocks as autonomy”, and “systems, not networks”. Even their innovation is weird: solar panels made out of the pulp of waste oranges? A People’s Energy Company? In this webinar, you will learn how they built this incredible success under very difficult conditions, and how their way of thinking might help you along your own journey.
July 21st, 2020: How can we support the recovery of the co-working sector? The purpose of the event is to explore how we can support the recovery of the coworking sector, which has been turned on its head with restrictions put in place to protect public health. With the future of work shaping up for a big move to remote work, it looks like our coworking spaces will be a big part of more people’s lives. Some early indications from some of our speakers already show this. Erin Westover is the European market lead at proptech company Upflex, which has seen an uptick in inquiries since Covid-19 hit as organisations have decided to make a move toward distributed work. Upflex works with established companies that have staff working remotely and allows employees to see which co-working spaces near their homes are free. October 14th, 2020: Reorganising the provision of goods & services to secure material basis of livelihoods. Focus Healthcare: We have seen similar stories play out in different countries around access to masks, ventilator spare parts, access to testing etc. Across global south and global north - crises hit differently - but they do hit. So how do we avoid these situations in the future? How do we make sure that we have the fundamental requirements to stay alive when crisis hits? In this series of listening sessions and follow up discussions we explore credible paths moving forward based on real life cases, not pie in the sky scenarios. And we will map out what actions we can do today, to prevent crises tomorrow. Possible partners: several in the works, more suggestions welcome.
