Dear @reef-conflict
In our last meeting, we talked about needs as the foundation of human behavior and communication. We were reflecting on how focusing on needs helps us move away from judging things as “right” or “wrong.” Recognizing that universal needs are simply neutral human motivators can make it easier to foster self-awareness, empathy, and genuine connection during conflicts.
Since the concept of a “need” can feel broad, I wanted to share the list developed by Marshall Rosenberg, which builds on Manfred Max-Neef’s model of universal human needs:
The 9 Categories of Universal Human Needs
-
Sustenance: Physical nourishment, water, air, shelter, and physical safety.
-
Security: Protection from harm, emotional stability, and predictability.
-
Connection & Love: Affection, intimacy, warmth, and emotional closeness.
-
Understanding & Empathy: Being seen, heard, and known for who we are.
-
Creativity: Self-expression, exploration, and bringing new ideas to life.
-
Recreation: Play, relaxation, humor, and rest.
-
Belonging: Acceptance, community, and feeling part of a larger whole.
-
Autonomy: Choice, freedom, and the space to direct our own lives.
-
Meaning & Purpose: Contribution, self-actualisation, and a purposeful life.
I’m sharing this here simply as an FYI (or out my need for contribution
)
