I'm a professional software developer, working full-time on a 3D design application and part-time on my own video game projects. I studied at the University of Central Lancashire in order to work in games and I mean to work in games - this does not, to me, mean applying to work at a large established video games company or even at a smaller indie company. What it means is discovering the best means by which I can acquire the resources that I need to own my own time and then putting this time into implementing the ideas that I have for the industry; the best way to lead is by example.
To me, the idea is more important than the product. In five years time, if I see other people taking the ideas that I've explored and then doing them better, then I will consider that to be great success.
