BBQ 27 June 2026

Hi @reeflings!

Looks like Saturday 27 June is a clear winner at this point. So barring an abysmal weather forecast, that shall be the date we aim for.

Here’s a link to the Excel sheet for what we can bring: Login – Nextcloud

You’ll see on Sheet 1 of the document what we brought last year, as a reference point. No need to fill in food and drinks yet, but it would be great if those who are coming can fill in the bit about tables, chairs, etc., so that we can make a plan for how to get everything to the site.

@LuciaM & @AlinT – hoping that we can use your big BBQ that day, as it was a great piece of kit for an event such as this!

@joannes – would you be available earlier that day to help me pick things up and transport them to the site, as we did last year?

Good morning @reeflings,

Just a heads-up from Team Community Life (TCL) that this gathering will constitute the “Sunday Hangout” event for the month of June. @ChrisM Mieke will be assisting you from TCL (and me for the July edition). If you need to coordinate further, or need help with a particular task, let’s stay in contact via Signal.

This is also a friendly reminder for the reeflings to fill in the excel with what everyone can bring Login – Nextcloud.

Thank you.
Lucia

Guys, just saying … in today’s weather forecast the peak of the heat wave is predicted for this Saturday, with temperatures up to 39° C. Probably no charcoal needed if we want to do some grilling?

@ChrisM could you confirm that this BBQ will happen considering the heatwave ?

@Lee did you mean to invite all neighbors whose contacts we have or just the immediate neighbors ( left, right, back and opposite ) ? I assume the latter..

Based on the info, I’ll ( or will not ) send an email / SMS to the neigbors this evening. Thank you !

@reef-external fyi.

Hi @Wenwei , thank you for stepping in! It would be great if you send out an invitation to the neighbours. Can you document it somewhere?

If it’s an e-mail, can you use The Reef’s proton mail plz?

I pictured just the immediate ones but it’s not my decision to make.

Hi everyone!

I’ve been agonising all day about whether or not to go ahead with the BBQ on Saturday in light of the heat forecast. Would prefer not to be deciding for everyone, but a bit late in the day to decide collectively…

So we’re going to go ahead with it! It’ll be hot, but coming out the other side of the peak, which looks to be Thursday and Friday. Obviously we will need to be very thoughtful about shade and having enough water to drink. But I think we can manage both :flexed_biceps:

On that note, in the next couple of days I will be contacting everyone who has said that they are coming, to see if we can add some umbrellas to the mix, and maybe some more large water containers. Joannes and I will be driving round town collecting things on Saturday morning, so hopefully we can add some of those to the mix. I will also construct some shade with tarps and ropes ( although with better orientation, for those of you who came last year  )

If you’re planning on coming but you haven’t put yourself on the poll, it would help if you could do that, so we have a clear idea about numbers and resources needed: Spending time on the site this summer - #6 by ChrisM

Similarly, you can take yourself off the poll if the heat is a dealbreaker for you… absolutely no judgement where personal perceptions of health and safety are concerned

I took myself off the poll because the afternoon heat is not an option for me, but I’ll try to swing by in the evening.

Hello!

Wouldn’t it be better to start the BBQ later in the day and have dinner together, rather than lunch? With the heat during the day, I’m not sure I can manage.

I do agree, specially with kids. Life is more bearable from 16.30 onwards. We are anyway unlikely to be there before 16.00, but we will join for the socials, not so much the food

For the record, the hottest part of the day during weather like this is 16h to 18h…

But it’s also true that the temperature will be dropping at the end of the day, and there will be more natural shade available.

So let’s have an evening BBQ!

I propose starting at about 17h and lighting the BBQ at around 18h30

Tagging @Wenwei for the neighbours’ invite.

Thanks Chris.

I’ve sent the invite to the contacts we have via email and SMS. @reef-external

I also managed to get the invite posted on the Ginkgo Jette WhatsApp group.

There are over 60 members in that group! We won’t have enough water, chairs, coal , etc. if even a third of them turn up. And the invite that got posted on the Comitè Ginkgo Jette group chat doesn’t even say to bring their own food and drinks…

I’m sorry, but putting on a BBQ for 25 people on a site with no facilities is one thing, requiring a fair amount of preparation. But doing the same thing for potentially 80 people requires so much more resources, time and effort than we have currently available, and I can’t just make that happen with two days notice

I’d just finished six hours of gardening in a heatwave when I wrote that last message, so my brain was a bit fried. Apologies @Odile if the tone was too strong  I realise that it probably seemed like a good initiative in terms of generating a good relationship with our neighbours…

Perhaps not many will turn up. At the very least, we will need to inform them that those who do come need to bring their own food to cook, and drinks, and ideally chairs.

And maybe the Reeflings who are coming could bring bigger quantities of salad etc. than they were planning, just to be safe.

I’ll organise to have more water and coal, and probably another BBQ available…
