Community call - 9/5

With Luce, Moushira, Noemi.

  1. Do we need to launch new Challenges?

Now that the Fellowship calls are open and we think they can inspire more people to submit stories, we see that the only real challenge in OpenCare is a very geenral one.

Can we get the next one out there in max 2 weeks?

Challenges/ or challenge briefs introduce the team + ask questions that community members could answer in their stories.

Brief Format:

A. Couple paragraphs about the care topic and why it is important that we address it

B. Examples of community led initiatives, solutions that are going in the OpenCare direction

C. List of questions to pick from and answer in a story

Example of a challenge brief (the shorter the better!):  https://edgeryders.eu/en/how-do-you-give-and-recieve-care

2. Resources and projects to approach

[we keep up with the use of “opencare” instead of Op3ncare in further newsletters and announcements]

3. Fellowships of 20K

Luce hasn’t gotten answers so far from the EC (2nd round of e-mail this week, tomorrow most likely). We will be advised on how to best offer those and be protected by the grant.

action Items

Focus on the notion of mental care, give it 2 weeks in order to harvest more challenges in this aspect.   WeMake shall post DIY related projects that fit into the theme and try to contact their makers while promoting the fellowship, and Noemi shall add more relevant stories for her Ireland visit.

Help finalize this brief (in development): https://docs.google.com/document/d/1x-bgtlVcqPYZ7J8Vxv5202ito9FklL3S_8d9sc9HaIs/edit#

Idea: contact a medical doctor to OK the brief before getting it out there, to avoid hurting or worsening the case of people with issues. (can we pay for one hour consultation for a doctor to check our alternative of questions and determine the best wording?)

Upcoming challenge on emotional/mental health

The reason I suggested we move with this is because we have incoming stories and no brief whatsoever, and it’s hard as it is to approach this sensitively…

Do yourselves a favor and read this response (currently in the OS and DYI  challenge) about “A flew over the cuckoos nest” real life situation: https://edgeryders.eu/en/care-in-the-community. These posts get harder to find unless it belongs to an active challenge.

I read Timothy’s post…

…still digesting and thinking about how to approach it. At this end I have been attempting to understand care in the context of the LGBTQ communities and high risk groups e.g. hackers and activists. Jeremie and Emily are doing interesting work in trying to bring care into the hacking space, while sensitising care practitioners to privacy and surveillance issues (and helping them to develop needed skills to navigate them).

Have a look at their re:Publica talk on this, and then let’s convene a call around shaping this challenge brief?

Btw I am going to be back in Berlin next week

…we could put together a workshop around this.

Sounds great.

Let’s have the Monday community call just for this topic (I’ll set it up), and if we’re in time to organise something in Berlin even better.

Thanks for the video, will watch just as I have a better connection (now on bus to Dublin).

Doctors/nurses in the community

There are doctors and nurses in the OpenCare community, and even more in the Edgeryders community. It would make sense to involve them, in fact. @markomanka is obvious, but @pjones is a professional mental health nurse reflecting about models of care and already posting onto OpenCare. Peter, what do you think?

Other long time-Edgeryders with skills in medicine are: @LucasG (epidemiologist) and @Vidrij_Da (nurse, holistic approach).  Lucas, David, are you aware of this OpenCare thing we are doing? If you need a once-over, I’ll be happy to give you one.
