We’re very looking forward to do… well, what we Edgeryders do best: wander off the beaten path, look in directions one doesn’t normally look, and make a case that the extraordinary people and projects working at the margins can get plenty of traction if they act as a community.
The context: our non-profit company, Edgeryders LBG, has been doing work in the field of European Capitals of Culture (ECOC) with Matera 2019 by launching the unMonastery (hackers residency and social clinic for the future), and is now working with Bucharest, running for 2021. Bucharest is a capital city, home to around 2 million people, and caters to 6 sectors, each with its own city hall. You can imagine we can only start small. Spot the Future Bucharest is an open experiment to discover citizens who wholeheartedly try to improve even a tiny aspect of their community’s life: cultural organisers, artists and activists, also hackers, social innovators, people in sustainability and new lifestyle movements, and so on. We expect a lot of them to be the Edgeryders kind. For those who don’t know us yet, Edgeryders is a community of people across the world who build, invent, connect, map, grow, occupy, all for the better cause - to create value in the environments in which we move.

A European capital of culture is not just about cultural institutions, or culture as arts. On the contrary, a city belongs to all its citizens, and the fact that Bucharest is running for the ECOC title is most attractive not for the win itself, but for the chance to (re)position with respect to its strategic future. See this as a door open to make yourself and promising projects in the city/neighborhoods visible to people who could join your efforts, even if the city doesn’t win.
Spot the Future lives here on Edgeryders, as it is part of a bigger story of working in global networks via open collaboration. We use the Internet because it is (still, somewhat) free-as-in-speech, it’s cheap, and enables people to connect beyond borders. Which is why in this project we welcome anyone and everyone. See it as an invitation to share your story with your peers, get advice and connect to initiatives globally.

Spot the Future Bucharest starts from a blank page, which means we build it together:

Online. In the next following weeks, we are going to meet each other here in this group online. Start by introducing yourself, your work, your life, by creating a post.
The group is entirely open, the more diverse people join us the more honest the conversation will be. We will be coordinating so that any news or opportunity comes in, it is shared with everyone via this channel. -
Offline. We will do physical meetups in Bucharest, also in the following weeks. These are as informal as it gets, mostly a chance for quality conversation over beer. If you would like to host one, it would be great, let us know?

Collaboratively. In July we get to design a workshop to show the world what our vision of the future is: it can be a projects fair, a hackathon, an unConference, whatever the community wants. If you want to partner up and join a team of organisers, tell us know how you see yourself involved.

Join the nascent Edgeryders Int’l Cultural Team! Working the second time around with a candidate city for European Capital of Culture (ECOC) is not a happy accident. In Matera we succeeded to signal that connecting social innovators can weigh in the bid process and radically help re-think culture by running open processes and building alliances with international movements. Matera ended up running with a concept around “open future”. As we wait to be involved in the next phase, now that it won, we want to pursue more work in the field of ECOCs as a distributed team, and Bucharest is a live test bed. We can bring networked social change at the forefront, while giving community members opportunities to act as conveners in their towns, access paid work and travel in ever new places. If you want to get involved, you’re most welcome to come visit, I have a spare room. Every year cities in Europe are applying for a cultural capital title, maybe you would like to approach your own? Get in touch, we think we can help!

Spot the Future is funded by ARCUB, the Cultural Centre of Bucharest Municipality. ARCUB is the entity coordinating the city’s bid for European Capital of Culture (ECOC) 2021. It has commissioned the study at the core of the city’s cultural and creative strategy for 2015-2025, and also gathered a team of independent cultural curators mobilizing their own diverse networks. Dacă trăiți sau munciți “on the edge”, în afara unor paradigme (e.g. fac un lucru pentru că îmi pasă, chiar dacă nu-mi plătește chiria, și văd eu cum rezolv), poate ați văzut că inovația socială profundă, despre care nu citești în reviste glossy începe de la margine, la scară de multe ori invizibilă, și prin oameni excepționali. În EdgeRyders pattern-ul acesta se repetă, avem deja membrii în peste 30 țări și ne confruntăm cu probleme similare: lipsa de acces la spații publice care ar trebui să fie bunuri comune, inegalități sociale crunte, oameni care lucrează separat în loc să pună la comun resurse, instituții care se uită oriunde dar nu înspre cetățeni și potențialul lor, și tot așa. Împreună am descoperit că problemele astea devin “atacabile” dacă funcționăm ca o rețea de sprijin reciproc… și finanțabile, prin comunitate ca resursă, mai degrabă decât prin business as usual:
Comunitățile, cele de-adevăratelea care se mișcă împreună spre ceva epic, se formează în timp. Noi nu putem decât să începem cu pași mici.Spot the Future un proiect experiment, deschis oricui dorește să vorbescă despre proiecte personale, piedici în realizarea lor, și resursele cu care poate merge înainte. Artiști-activiști din zona culturii alternative, inovatori sociali, inventatori, hackeri, oameni care testează concepte de sustenabilitate urbană sau stil de viață… e loc pentru toată lumea. Ne vom uita în direcții noi, ciudate chiar! și vom încerca să legitimăm împreună abordări constructive.
Pretextul e următorul: Bucureștiul candidează la titlul de Capitală Culturală Europeană 2021. Titlul e o șansă pentru orașe să se profileze ca agenți ai transformării la nivel internațional. E și mai mult o provocare pentru cetățeni: ei trebuie să se (re)poziționeze față de un oraș care dintr-o dată va avea, de voie de nevoie, o direcție strategică. Indiferent dacă Bucureștiul câștigă sau nu, grupuri de cetățeni pot revendica bătălii duse la alte nivele: dacă reușim să construim comunitate, arătăm că (1) înțelegem unde sunt obstacolele prioritare și mai ales, (2) ce putem face ca grup de acțiune local, racordat la mișcări globale. Cu Edgeryders am mai lucrat, și probabil vom continua, cu Matera - câștigătoarea titlului CCE 2019 în Italia. Acolo am lansat un spațiu local de rezidență pentru hackeri și artiști deopotrivă - unMonastery, unde cetățenii orașului pot accesa expertiză foarte specifică, într-un mix local-global. Am construit timp de vreo doi ani un argument pentru un viitor în care protagoniști sunt cetățenii. Impactul se judecă încă, dinamica puterii în oraș se re-ajustează, însă oamenii s-au conectat la un alt mod de a face lucrurile: radical deschis.

Merită să încercăm? Ok, cum începem să ne cunoaștem unii pe alții?

Online. Ne reunim aici pe platformă, din motive care țin de coordonare cu Edgeryders la nivel global care ne pot ajuta cu sfaturi. Am învățat să colaborăm online pentru că Internetul e (încă) liber, gratis, și ne permite să participăm cât de mulți, cât dorim. Proiectul e deschis oricui vrea să povestească despre ce face, cum muncește, cum participă în comunitate. Acesta e grupul de acțiune, unde poți să începi prin a te înscrie și a spune celorlalți:

cum participi la transformarea orașului cu obsesii, sacrificii, mijloace proprii?

pe cine mai trebuie neapărat să abordăm pentru o doză de inspirație?

Offline. Organizăm împreună întâlniri în următoarele săptămâni să discutăm ce putem face în contextul București 2021. Ne gândim la întâlniri informale și conversații interesante la bere. Ai vrea sa organizezi una din ele? Fă o propunere printr-o postare mai jos.

În colaborare. În iulie propunem un workshop pe care îl formatăm cum dorim, în funcție de zonele în care membrii din comunitate sunt implicați deja. Putem organiza un târg de proiecte, un laborator de experimente, o nonConferință etc. Dacă vrei să te implici de pe-acum în organizare sau vrei ca organizația ta să fie partener, spune-ne.
