How to bring as much transparency and as little notification overload: a quick reminder about our digital communication channels

Dear @reeflings,

With the intention of keeping our communication as efficient and transparent as it can be, I am taking the liberty to put in a short reminder abour our working methods around digital communication.

The very short summary is this that we aim for as much transparency as possible, because it contributes to trust and accountability. This means that all important information should be accessible to all Reeflings.
Concretely this means that all relevant communication should be on Edgeryders (exchanges) or on Nextcloud (documents). Or put negatively: this means that we try to not use private messages or Signal chat groups for things that could also be be interesting for other people in the group.

Another thing we try to achieve is minimising notification overload, and giving everybody the opportunity to not be exposed to The Reef’s communication when we don’t want to. Using a bit of jargon, we made the choice for “pull” communication, which means that people come to Edgeryders when they have the mindspace for it, without receiving any notifications.

Concretely this means that we only put “chitchat” in the Chitchatters chat (which everybody is free to ignore), and try to avoid mixing in “work” related messages. An exception can be made for urgent and important matters of course, but it really contributes to stress reduction if we can keep the chitchatters chat as relaxed as possible. Important messages should be on Edgeryders, and everybody is expected to come check in at least twice a week.

For more clarifications on this topic, you can read up in our Onboarding Manual:
