Onboarding of new and not so new reeflings

In the last PM (25/08), some feedback was given about the onboarding.

I admit that in the last year R&O’s focus was mainly on recruitment, and less on onboarding.

With this post, an attempt to bring some clarity on what is already existing and some extra possibilities.

  1. There is a lot available on NextCloud

    The name of document says it all: the Onboarding manuel (The reef shared folder/Onboarding/Onboarding package): not only destined for exploring and associate members, but certainly also for full members.

    The table of contents gives an overview of all topics. You will find links to free manuals and free videos. There is the link to the decision log, which gives an overview of all decisions taken.

    The Onboarding Package as a whole, which - next to the Onboarding manuel - includes several slide decks and manuals that aim at helping everybody to find their way in The Reef.

  2. There is Edgeryders

    Launch a search with a specific tag, like reef-governance, reef-legal, reef-building
    Here a recent one for those wanting to learn more about sociocracy (it’s free): an introduction to sociacracy

  3. The buddies (for exploring and associate members)

    Don’t hesitate to ask your buddies any question. If they don’t know, they will know who to contact.

  4. Trainings (open to all members)

    With reef-governance we want to foresee some trainings in the PM’s, if we notice that there is a slot free.

    On the reef retrait, there will be surely some topics as well, related to some governance/working methods topics. Link to ongoing poll

    You can off course also follow external trainings. All full members have right to a 100 euro reimbursement for a NVC or sociocracy training (see 8,3 in the onboarding manuel). There is Connecting2Life offering online NVC courses at a good price. And the Sofa platform give trainings on sociacracy.

  5. Other

    • We used to have an online Q&A session, mainly oriented towards Exploring members. Chris and myself organised it several times, but there were little to no people showing up. Is this something we should reintroduce, and if so, what is the best moment to foresee this (once becoming AM?) ?

I think it might be also be interesting to highlight the Onboarding Package as a whole (Login – Nextcloud), which next to the Onboarding Manual includes several slide decks and manuals that aim at helping everybody to find their way in The Reef.

Dear Els, thanks for the feedback on the feedback - I could not attend the last PM so I simply take the opportunity to add my 2 cents here: From Day 1 I felt well informed and looked after. I feel that despite the enormous amount of information, I did not feel overwhelmed because of your onboarding approach that offers multiple ways to get support. Whenever I do not find or know anything, I feel that there is always someone to reach out - my buddies or someone else. The process has been so far very clear and the pace was fine for me. I fully understand that the entire adventure can feel overwhelming though so this is strictly my personal impression. I think the effort you all put in the reef is absolutely mind-blowing and the fact that you’re constantly learning and improving clearly shows a level of reflection that is impressive. I feel like Germans tend to hide positive feedback sometimes so here we are. Have a nice day everyone!

@els thanks Els for the information. The onboarding package is indeed very useful especially in the beginning when there is so much to digest.

Training and retreat are good ideas, unfortunately for the moment it is rather difficult for us to do justice to these opportunities due to other and rather urgent business. Hopefully things will calm down a bit towards the end of the year and we can concentrate on The Reef
