    • My answers to Qs 1-5: . My name is Nadia EL-Imam. a 32 year old engineer and designer born in Sweden, raised in Europe and Asia, now living & working in Stockholm & Brussels. I'm a proud co-founder of Edgeryders, and one of the driving forces behind the unMonastery.
  6. Chi sono gli edgeryders? (Who are Edgeryders?): Edgeryders is a growing network of 1600+ people from around the globe building social and technical infrastructure to get radically innovative responses to systemic crises off the ground, and keep them there. People in Edgeryders are experimenting with everything from urban gardening for foodsecurity, occupying unused spaces, exploring cryptographic currencies and building spaces fornew kinds of democratic participation.
  7. Come nascono? (how did Edgeryders come into existence?):  Edgeryders started out as a research project by the Council of Europe and the European Commission to produce recommednations for how 47 member states (of COe) could respond to youth unemployment. Upon termination, the community spinned it off and built itself a new home on the web. A social enterprise, Edgeryders LBG, has been created to maintain and support the community's infrastructure.

  9. Quale lo scopo? (What is the purpose?): To support p2p collaboration around creative responses to ecological, economic and sociopolitical crises threatening our futures. Global unrest, rapid climate change, mass unemployment, outdated governance structures. Everyone at the centre says they want innovation, but after reviewing thousands of pages of ethnographic data, first hand accounts of HOW people are realising these innovative responses to systemic crises and instability, we found that the actors you would expect to be there,  supporting this work,  are nowhere to be seen. So we decided to just get on with the work of buiding our own mutual support infrastructure, on a massive scale.  Peer to peer.

  11. quelle future? (What is the future of Edgeryders?): For one thing we are building a business offering authorative, authentic and democratically legitimate advice  to decision makers in private and public sector organisations. Capitalism is ever changing, but right now it is changing very quickly and quite unpredictably.      . Out of these changes will come winners and losers. Schumpeter gave the classic description of thisprocess when he called it "creative destruction". Anyone who doubts the destruction part needonly look and what has happened to Blackberry and to Nokia.So, "Business As Usual" is now totally last century..and the incumbents in the consulting industry no longer have all of the answers. Einstein had a great line about it the insanity of repeating the same process and expecting different results. At Edgeryders we don't claim to have them all either and we are not saying that they should hire us instead of them. The reason for hiring Edgeryders is perspective. The analysis we can give is not only un-obtainable from anyone else but it allows our clients to re-interpret the results theu get from theincumbents in a different light. It is only by standing at the edge of a precipice that you start to seethe path down. The Edgeryders community and corporation are already at the edge....We want to help others start on that journey together.
  12. Come vi legate a unMonastery? (How are Edgeryders tied to the unMonastery?): The unMonastery is an initiative born out of, and is driven by members of, the Edgeryders community. We asked ourselves how we could bridge the current gap in the innovation support system for pre-market/ radical/ non profit phases of the innovation process. We had also been discussing how we could bridge the growing gap between needing to do meaningful work and make a living. The unmonastery came of of this conversation.

(How is Edgeryders tied to Living on the Edge?): It is clear that we – the Edgeryders already in the community, and those we will meet along the way – are powerful allies for each other. Just as importantly, we are a comforting presence for each other in times of exhaustion, pessimism and defeat, which are frequent. So we organise the Living on the Edge events to inpire one another, learn and teach  each other new skills and build capacity  to get better and better at moving from talk to action. We have new tools at our disposal (Edgeryders-the-company and the unMonastery itself, perhaps others), but even if we did not, one person's usual tools and practices are new to another.

Vanity Fair: Ilaria's answers

  • Questions 1-5: my name is Ilaria d'Auria, I am 30 years old. I recently decided to move back to Italy after over 10 years in Brussels and the rest of my life scattered around Europe. After doing academic research in Sociology and managing an art-café in Brussels I settled for planning (progettazione) and fundraising for projects with a strong social impact. Edgeryders is my new home, and the unMonastery is my daily prospective horizon. 

1. Come ti sei trovata coinvolta in tutto questo? (How did you become part of all this) Se “tutto questo” significa Matera2019, Edgeryders e unMonastery, direi che mi sono trovata coinvolta segendo un misto di curiosità, intuito e intraprendenza. Facevo parte del gruppo di giovani che nel lontano 2009 ha iniziato a sensibilizzare la città di Matera sulla possibilità di diventare Capitale europea della Cultura nel 2019. Iniziare a parlare di una manifestazione 10 anni prima dell’evento era per molti una cosa insensata: facevano spallucce perché quell’orizzonte lontano sembrava irrealistico. Adesso il futuro è già qui, e la candidatura di Matera è diventata patrimonio comune. Mi sono iscritta sulla piattaforma di Edgeryders mentre stava finendo il progetto sostenuto dal Consiglio d’Europa e dalla Commissione Europea, ma ho iniziato a essere parte attiva soltanto dopo il raduno annuale della comunità a Bruxelles. Non avevo mai fatto parte di una comunità virtuale, e un misto di timore e di meraviglia mi trattenevano dall’intervenire in rete su temi che mi trovavo interessanti ma di cui ero inesperta. Da quando mi sono lanciata, mi si è aperto un mondo: condividere i contenuti e elaborarli insieme porta a una conoscenza condivisa che aumenta il capitale intellettuale di tutti, di chi scrive e di chi legge solamente. Il motore della mia partecipazione online viene dal fatto che il tempo che dedico alla piattaforma è un tempo che acquisisce un valore immenso proprio per l’apprendimento reciproco e la consapevolezza che stai ignettando benzina in un motore di un veicolo che sta prendendo un percorso inesplorato. E una spinta collettiva attraverso l’ignoto per contibuire a una visione di futuro condivisa. Quando ho sentito parlare di unMonastery durante il raduno di Bruxelles, ho subito pensato a Matera. Quale luogo migliore per ospitare il prototipo di un nuovo tipo di spazio sociale che parlasse al contempo di passato e di futuro? Stiamo creando un significato condiviso di un nuovo tipo di istituzione, perché vediamo che le forme organizzative esistenti che ci circondano non sono riuscite a dare delle risposte soddisfacenti ai bisogni sempre più pressanti che affronta la società.

2. Il tuo ruolo di legame in cosa consiste? (In what way do you act as a connecting link) Si diventa “interfaccia” quasi naturalmente, un po per carattere, un po per ragioni pratiche: vivo tra Bruxelles e Matera, sono parte attiva della comunità virtuale di Matera 2019 e di Edgeryders, collaboro con Matera 2019 ma non solo. Tutto questo è amplificato dal fatto che non sono gelosa dei miei contatti ma credo che mettendo in circolazione le nostre risorse siamo tutti più ricchi. Facilitare gli incontri, mettere in contatto le persone, indicare progetti simili mi viene naturale, mi rende felice. Per come la vedo io, chi non è valido si nuoce da solo. Lo so che quando ci guardiamo intorno vediamo il contrario: per questo sceglo di operare all’interno di reti come Edgeryders!

3. Il “nonmonastero” una risposta al futuro perché? (In what way is the unMonstery an answer to the future) Il futuro è un’incognita. In passato è stato spesso sinonimo di speranza e di progresso. Oggi quest’ignoto puo prendere forme molto più cupe e ansiogene. Le forme di organizzazione che abbiamo trovato finora hanno dimostrato i loro limiti, si stanno sgretolando o si stanno modificando profondamente: la famiglia, il partito, la scuola, il parlamento, l’impresa. Abbiamo imparato che tutto questo non è inamovibile, ed è possibile pensare a un nuovo tipo di istituzione - in questo caso che si ispira ai principi monastici del passato, aggiornandoli alle sfide di oggi. Il prototipo di Matera è un assaggio di quello che vuole essere l’unMonastery nel tempo: una residenza continua di innovatori che risiedono in una località e si mettono al servizio della comunità condividendo le proprie competenze in cambio di vitto e alloggio. L’unMonastery è un luogo per sperimentare nel tempo nuove risposte a bisogni sociali pressanti di una comunità, liberando chi sceglie di fare una scelta cosi radicale dalla precarietà lavorativa: non c’è arricchimento personale (dal punto di vista monetario) ma viene assicurata una stabilità e una sicurezza sotto altri punti di vista. 4. Perché hai scelto di partecipare all’esperienza dei 4 mesi, un perché della tua candidatura?

Sono convinta che siamo tutti attori del miglioramento della società che ci auspichiamo: il cambiamento non succederà finché non ci mettiamo in gioco in prima persona. C’è chi puo farlo di più, chi un po meno. Inoltre, credo molto nel format della residenza: ho potuto toccare con mano il potenziale creativo di un processo limitato nel tempo e nello spazio per favorire l’approfondimento di una ricerca su un tema specifico. Mentre contribuivo alla realizzazione di tutto cio, ho pensato che il lavoro che sto portando avanti con altre due persone poteva inserirsi benissimo all’interno dell’unMonastery. Non ci abbiamo pensato due volte.

5. LIVING (non Stage) on the Edge è il punto di partenza…in cosa si differenzia dall’unMonastery? Edgeryders funziona con 2 strumenti: la piattaforma online e il raduno annuale offline. Dopo Strasburgo e Bruxelles è stata scelta Matera per la terza edizione (lote3). unMonastery è un progetto che nasce nella rete degli Edgeryders: visto che ha preso corpo a Matera e che le residenze partono a Febbraio 2014, abbiamo deciso di fare un unPilgrimage (non-pellegrinaggio) per inaugurare il sito dell’unMonastery, creare momentum intorno all’iniziativa sia a livello locale che internazionale e riflettere insieme sugli aspetti più pratici e più profondi dell’unMonastery. Una delle tre sessioni del programma di LOTE sarà interamente dedicata al “making-of” dell’unMonastery.

6. Parlami della candidatura di Matera a capitale della cultura? (Tell me about Matera’s bid to European Capital of Culture)

La candidatura di Matera è un percorso condiviso che nasce nel 2009 da un gruppo di giovani costituiti in associazione culturale per sensibilizzare la città e il territorio a quest’opportunità. Il sostegno regionale e di tutti gli altri livelli aministrativi è avvenuto poco dopo: Matera puo vantare il sostegno ufficiale dei 131 comuni della Basilicata, altro che campanilismo! La proposta principale che Matera fa all’Europa è TOGETHER TO-GET THERE. INSIEME, abitanti culturali oltre la crisi per un nuovo modello di sviluppo economico che non prescinda dalla cultura. “Quella di Matera è dunque la candidatura responsabile di tutto un territorio che intende contribuire alla ricostruzione culturale, morale e civile del nostro Paese e rafforzare il ruolo della Basilicata, del Mezzogiorno e dell’Italia in Europa”. Il concetto di base, “INSIEME”, si articola in “una trama e una struttura del programma della candidatura composte da 5 passaggi che formano un percorso circolare e ricorsivo: futuro remoto, radici e percorsi, riflessioni e connessioni, continuità e rotture, utopie e distopie” (cf. dossier di candidatura ufficiale). L’altra cosa da sottolineare è che l’Italia è il primo paese le cui città candidate hanno firmato un appello comune, Italia 2019, affinché la candidatura a capitale europea della cultura diventi piattaforma di sviluppo condiviso del sistema paese.

7. E stato difficile portare Living On The Edge a Matera dopo le esperienze estere? (Was it difficult to bring the LOTE to Matera after Strasburg and Brussels)? I primi due raduni annuali erano nel quadro del progetto del Consiglio d’Europa e della Commissione europea. La scelta di Matera per il primo raduno organizzato interamente dalla rete è venuta naturalmente: sono in molti a voler conoscere e scoprire il luogo che ospiterà il primo unMonastery al mondo! Inoltre, l’incontro è stato facilitato da diversi momenti di interazione tra la città e gli Edgeryders: c’è chi ha partecipato a uno scambio di innovatori a Matera, chi invece è venuto per i workshops partecipato in vista dell’unMonastery. Non ultimo, l’incontro tra la comunità online di Matera 2019 e quella degli Edgeryders ha facilitato molto la costruzione dell’evento LOTE e ha spianato la strada per l’incontro che avverrà tra pochi giorni! Niente è difficile, se si fa insieme - come lo slogan di Matera2019: TOGETHER TO-GET-THERE!

8. Quante possibilità ci sono per la candidatura? (How many chances are there for Matera2019) Il dossier di candidatura è stato consegnato il 20 Settembre al MIBAC, insieme alle altre 20 città candidate. Entro la fine dell’anno una shortlist sarà selezionata per la corsa finale. La mia testimonianza è quella di una città che ha iniziato il percorso dieci anni prima della data dell’evento, intraprendendo iniziative audaci e innovative, nonostante la scarsità di risorse e l’instabilità politica che stiamo vivendo. C’è una comunità che ci crede tantissimo, e abbiamo trovato sulla nostra strada dei sostenitori di grande valore: la Basilicata c’è, TOGETHER, TO-GET-THERE!

9. Altre esempi del miracolo Edgeryders? (Other examples of the “Edgeryders miracle”) Non parlerei di miracolo, ma di un lavoro collaborativo facilitato dalla piattaforma e profondamente legato al valore aggiunto dell’intelligenza collettiva e al radicamento territoriale di molti di noi. Sulla piattaforma di Edgeryders vengono prodotti diversi progetti. Alcuni sono più di elaborazione di contenuti, come l’elaborazione di un “Libro delle ricette per realizzare progetti di valore”, altri invece sono più collegati a un evento specifico, come la proposta del Hackaton in vista delle elezioni del parlamento europeo del 2014. Penso che non ci sia risposta migliore a questa domanda che un viaggio attraverso la piattaforma e la partecipazione diretta ai progetti che più ispirano!

  • My answers to Qs 1-5: . My name is Ben Vickers. a 27 year old based in London. I work across many different projects within different roles, for which the only common thread is the desire to build infrastructure and support for new forms of work and living that create greater meaning for those participating. I am currently Curator of Digital at the Serpentine Gallery in London, researcher at Brighton University, co-run LIMAZULU Project Space, active member of EdgeRyders but most importantly the lead facilitator of the unMonastery project.  

how did you get the idea about unMonastery?

The idea for the unMonastery arose at the first EdgeRyders unConference in Strasberg in 2012 in a session that included around 20 participants - following a 2 day conference at the Council of Europe. The idea grew from the realisation that in order to support the sort of work individuals were doing outside of pre-existing institutions there was a critical need to build the foundations and infrastructure ourselves.

Many different ideas were discussed and pitched in this first session but it was the idea of a contemporary Monastery that stuck. Firstly because we wanted a powerful idea that was capable of thinking far into the future with a view to learning from the past. Secondly because the multi-purpose role Monasteries were founded on, met with the interdisciplinary way individuals were working to create new projects. Similarly to traditional monasteries; in which scripture was penned, beer was brewed and prays recited, the unMonastery doesn’t act with a fixed set outcomes or rituals - instead it seeks to create value through actions that are relevant to its specific context and create meaning for those participating. Combined with a desire to merge work and life.


Since coining the name we have worked to mine the traditions and understand the relationship our project might have to the history of monastic life, so we can better serve small towns and cities throughout Europe.   

numbers: how many there have been requests to participate?

Over the past year over 30 people have put an enormous amount of energy and work into supporting the project and growing the idea, with each passing week this continues to grow.

We have an international team of around 10 committed individuals volunteering their time in order to further the project. For the unMonastery in Matera we will accept 10 applications from individuals who wish to tackle the challenges laid out by the community we have been working with in Matera over the past 8 months.

how many were they chosen?what is the age group?

The first iteration of unMonastery in Matera will see 10 individuals come together to live and work on projects that aim to solve the challenges set out by the citizens of the city - this group is formed of ages from 18-60. It’s important that the unMonastery is an intergenerational project that can support work between young people and their elders, in order for it to be a success, it is acknowledged that there is much to learn between the different approaches of all generations.

unMonestary what do you want to prove? as you try to be of help to Matera?


So many people are struggling do something meaningful and having to hustle, doing work to have a roof over their head and food; essentially taking time away from what drives them.

unMonastery offers a deal similar to that of the monasteries of old: lodging, board and time to think and realize ideas and projects, relatively free from the need to make money. This deal is predicated on the idea that individuals should commit such work to solving common and specific problems. In Matera we will aim to create new approaches to energy resource through renewable energy solutions, look to develop innovative solutions to waste management and find ways to create a space for young people to engage with older generations.


The gambit behind this collaboration is that living side by side, hackers and Materans discover and explore new paths to make the city more beautiful, liveable, resilient and low cost.

idea of the monastery is the past, you want to look to the future … how to combine the two?

The unMonastery model is heavily indebted to the concept of hackerspaces, co-operatives where individuals come together to make and invent new things.

These spaces have evolved rapidly over the past 5 years, now spanning the globe. What they lack, is a clear and considered way in which they can benefit the communities in which they reside - by combining the futuristic and competent skills of hackers and makers with the idea of the unMonastery’s social contract we hope to build a long standing institution that meets the needs of local populations and begins to tackle the fundamental challenges of our age.  

It will be an isolated experiment or want to be just the beginning?

This is just the beginning, we are incredibly grateful to the Matera 2019 committee and the citizens of Matera for allowing us to test run and build the first iteration of unMonastery in their city. We hope that this first version we teach us what we need to understand in order to create unMonasteries in many other countries, we actively encourage other groups to adopt and learn from our approach to build unMonasteries in their own towns and cities.
