Uruguay's housing cooperative model

I have recently learned that Uruguay has a well established tradition of housing cooperative. 5% of the country’s households live in cooperative dwellings. Apparently, they ran the first experiments in the early 1960s, and they were super successful. That led to a lot of interest and many more projects being launched.

Government policy around housing adapted, which is where the difference with Belgium really stings. One interesting idea they came up with is that you can become member of a housing cooperative without savings, paying “in kind”, which means contributing 21 hours a week of labor towards the construction effort. Tasks are allocated according to individual abilities.
