Well, definitely social media, I mean Instagram seems to have become a bit of our main launch platform, it’s a way to make ourselves known from the outside. So that, and then well, every now and then some newspaper. Then there are all the tools we use for our internal organization, so there is our platform for holding online meetings and there is Mattermost, but in truth, perhaps lately we are using Telegram more for quick exchanges. For actions, there is Signal.

E perché Signal?

And why Signal?

Because the data is saved on the device and not on a cloud, so the moment you delete the app, the information is no longer retrievable. At least that’s what I understood.

In my opinion, a platform that we are relaunching a bit in this period and that I am very happy about is the Wiki, which I think is a really cool tool for horizontality. It’s really very beautiful and if we take good care of it, I think it becomes an incredible resource. And instead, we are moving a bit away from the cloud to put things in the Wiki and make them more accessible. And then there is the Base (Discourse) which collects all, let’s say, all the minutes, the reports, and that too is a really super useful tool.

Then Miro too. Especially maybe when we have to do things facilitated with an external person who facilitates, maybe it’s difficult to take minutes and facilitate them together, but to note down all the interventions, doing a bit of graphic facilitation works very well. I have also used it as internal coordination to perhaps make maps of the group’s work.

Tante piattaforme.

Then now there is this new thing of Mattermost boards and I don’t know very well how they work, but it’s something that is emerging, so maybe someone will explain it to us better. And then there was the whole process of the second request where a platform called Polis was definitely used to collect all the input. That was also very interesting. Many platforms.

Grazie.

Thank you. Would you like to tell me how you organize analog spaces instead, how do you meet as a local group, for example, in person?

In person, I participate in my small Affinity Group (GdA) in Montebelluna, which has just been born. An affinity group is a group of like-minded people who mainly plan actions. But in reality, we also do it to build community. They are simply a slightly less heavy structure than a Local Group at the moment, given that there are few of us. Everyone is a bit laid back, so they are much more relaxed gatherings where we plan things, but there isn’t the very precise structure that exists in XR meetings, simply because we are also fine just being together. It’s actually very nice; I had perhaps never experienced a bit of XR so relaxed and beautiful. And obviously, it also works very well to respect everyone’s time. Instead, with the local group, we have a very nice space in Treviso that lets us use a room for free when we ask; it’s called Binario Uno. The plenaries are usually in mixed mode, so some people are online and some are in person, and it’s not something that drives me crazy, but oh well, it’s the way we manage to get as many people as possible to participate. And so, usually when we meet, maybe everyone brings something and we snack on something. The way we organize them is with an agenda, facilitation, and in reality, very often the facilitators are people who are not really trained in facilitation, so we do our best there too.

Do you also have working groups in your local group? And how is a local group structured beyond the plenary?

There are perhaps 4 working groups at the moment and more individual roles. The working groups meet among themselves when they can, often online in truth. And then they report the decisions made in the plenary and, if necessary, ask for feedback.

And instead, you mentioned a couple of national groups you are part of, this Culture and Processes Group and the Local Sprouts Group. Can you tell me a bit about what these working groups are, if there are others, and how they relate to each other?

Germogli Locali l’ho fatto nascere io insieme a [nome] anni fa.

I started Germogli Locali (Local Sprouts) together with [name] years ago. I am very attached to it, in the sense that it is not easy to start a national group without resources to draw from because no one had done it before in exactly this way; not even XR UK had resources regarding it.

So it is a group that struggled a lot to find its identity, struggled in its relationship with other groups, and in my opinion, was also a little snubbed, but I believe simply because it wasn’t very clear what it did. And then there was a dramatic moment where there was a conspiracy in which people had decided they no longer wanted Germogli Locali, but they didn’t tell us—like triangulations, chats, a mess. Now we are a bit in a moment of restructuring where we finally have a decent staff of 5 active people, something that has never happened because usually we were always 3 or 4 at most.

And we are really, like, rethinking things from the top, learning from what we have experienced. In my opinion, it is very beautiful because I haven’t seen many national groups do this type of reflection, taking all the various aspects and rethinking them again, making a strategic plan: very stimulating. Then, besides Germogli, there are other national groups like Culture and Processes, which is another group I have been part of. By the way, I am in 2 national groups because for a while I didn’t belong to any local group and therefore because I was traveling. Now the situation is this, and for now, everything seems balanced to me. Culture and Processes deals with the internal culture of the movement and processes, and I also find that a super stimulating space.

It is a bit heavy at times because, like, when you don’t know what to do with something within the coordination of all the action groups, you say, “Oh well, let’s give it to CeP,” so we get a lot of stimuli that are also very different from each other. But it’s nice. And in my opinion, there is also a super tough group with a lot of fantastic people who do a lot of things, and I truly feel deep admiration for every single person in that group. And then there are other national groups like Finance, Media, Escalation, Tech, which deals with the platforms.

However, all the external coordinations of these groups then meet in a coordination and SIT (Support Italy) coordination.

Ok, so it is the national group, the national organization of this movement in Italy.

Yes, all national groups are created to provide support to local groups, so in theory the SIT is where this support is coordinated. Then in practice it cannot always be like that, but that is another matter.

Okay grazie.

Okay, thanks. Returning to the use of both digital tools and analog spaces, in your opinion, does this hybrid mode, where I imagine you meet in person when you are in the same city, in the same place, and digitally also to shorten the distances a bit between people, between activists who are all over Italy, make a difference in your way of acting and achieving an impact?

Yes, a lot. Let’s say that in my opinion it is much easier to be operational when you are online and this can be a good or a bad thing, in the sense that it is very difficult to create that situation where you chat a little, there are informal spaces. And I bring this up a lot in every group I go through, I always say “I would like to know other ways too”. Because in my opinion, for the type of work done in these groups, which is sometimes also very delicate and maybe, if you are like me, it also moves you very deeply and emotionally. It is important to also bring all this more emotional, deeper part of the work in my opinion because they are all important information that can be useful to the process. And these are things that come out especially if you know that you are with people you are comfortable with. I mean, I don’t mean people you trust because obviously there is trust, but it’s like saying perhaps a trust more linked to work. And I sometimes make the effort to make myself vulnerable even if I don’t know the people very well, but it is difficult.

Yes, I also realize that because of how XR is structured it is difficult to have many live moments. But hey, having the GdA experience where we all live super close and where we can also go out in the evening to have a beer is very nice for me. Then I think it’s an experience that maybe other local groups manage to have, but here it is difficult in cities that are a bit provincial where maybe you are all in the province of Treviso but one lives in, for example, Montebelluna and the other lives in Sant’Antonino, which are still like 40 minutes by car.

I would move on to a series of issues related to communication. I don’t know if you have ever been involved in the aspects of taking care of the message to the media. By any chance, can you think of any situation within the movement you are part of where you tried to generate a message to the public, an image, a slogan, a narrative, which then, however, took on different meanings for different groups or subjects, that is, that perhaps for the movement it meant a certain thing, but for, I don’t know, politicians it was interpreted differently or by certain people, other movements, newspapers, and so on?

Well, let’s say that our goal as a movement is not to reach everyone. I mean, if we do an action and Salvini posts about us on his page saying, “Gang of thugs!”, we are not surprised, right? And that’s fine, in the sense that it is very difficult to create universal messages and creating them might perhaps denature the movement. So it seems inevitable to me that we cannot reach everyone; in fact, during our actions, a question we always ask ourselves is “what is the target we want to reach and how can we use words and images to get the message to those people.” Specific examples are very difficult to give because it happens every time, like.

Because obviously now there is very polarized information. And so newspapers that follow a certain line serve that line and others serve another. I must say, in reality, that lately the Press Group is working super well and many other newspapers simply pick up our press release. But it is something we are aware of. There was a moment of discussion about this very thing last year when we had to change the opening action and in the end we lowered a banner from the Colosseum with the words “Disarm the Earth.”

That one when you had done these days of actions in which, however, the first action was canceled and replaced by this one you are talking about because the Pope died?

Esatto.

Exactly. It was the day of his funeral and “Disarm the Earth” was a phrase of his. Our intent was to demonstrate the inconsistency of politicians like Trump who attended the funeral when the Pope had also brought other messages during his life. But, for example, there was a fear of being misunderstood by people who supported the Pope in his entirety, right? And obviously, he also said a lot of bullshit in his life.

So the doubt was even generated within the movement itself, and we did it, and it was also well received, I believe. But yes, it is a question we often ask ourselves.

Do you use, as an activist, or do you use, as a movement, artificial intelligence tools?

No, I personally don’t. I used ChatGPT once, like when it had just come out, because I had a mold of a different size, I had to make a cake, and I didn’t want to calculate the doses, that’s all. No, jokes aside, I am very critical of artificial intelligence; I also realize that I’m fine not using it. I know that perhaps at times, maybe in the academic research field, it can be fine, but to me, it’s something that scares me too much, and I have a total rejection of it.

Perché ti spaventa?

Why does it scare you?
