A look at the German interviews corpus

In today’s meeting, we agreed to treat each corpus in its own separate way. The German corpus has the characteristic that there are not many male informants, so we run the analysis in terms of the interviews of the female informants.

We need:

  1. An overall visualization for the German corpus as a whole
  2. A visualization for the German corpus in the same way as I did here: Experimenting with visualizing gender in co-occurrence networks. With a difference: we are going to map edge color to female prevalence, and edge size to edge strength.
  3. Ego networks with gender prevalence of distrust and negative emotions. @Richard to provide other codes.

Descriptive statistics

The German corpus consists of 28 interviews coded with ethno-rebelpop-deutsch-interviews . Some interviews involve multiple informants (for example: https://edgeryders.eu/t/ger05-2wellbeing/16900). Unique users are 44, with three being part of the POPREBEL team (@Richard , @Djan and @Biene). There are overall 28 topics, with 605 posts, for a grand total of 72K words.

The codes co-occurrence network from this corpus uses 882 codes. There are 16,560 co-occurrences, which add up to 10,410 stacked edges. The network has the usual core-periphery structure.

Highest core values

The highest-k core in the stacked network contains 42 codes (k = 41). They are visualized in blue in the figure above. Redder color maps to broader edges.

Simmelian backbone

The Simmelian backbone of this network resolves in clearly visible communities starting at r around 20. For r > 23, the reduced network (229 codes, 2,673 edges) has seven communities:

The community to the south contains most of the codes in the 41-core described above (in blue). The broader edges, however, are to the northwest, center and southeast.

Association depth and association breadth

These two measures are strongly correlated, as we have come to expect (correlation coefficient: 0.65).

The 10 deepest edges are all clustered around impact of COVID-19:

They are almost the same as the 11 broadest edges:

This is the network reduced by breadth for b >= 3 (90 codes, 203 edges):

And this is reduced by depth, for d >= 7 (79 codes, 159 edges):
