Zegardani - the hero of the village mothers

When I think about Zegardani, one phrase comes to mind: mother of the world! Yes! I have entered into the motherly world, in which one perfectly knows about a motherโ€™s care and love, and where even the ground smells and steams like milk, where grizzle-haired mothers are unable to count their great-grandchildren! โ€˜Barsamiโ€™, that is how these mothers respond to the question: how many children do you have? Then they start to count on their fingers that are not clearly enough, starting it over and over, fondling the great-grandchildren, their descendants and future generation.

Zegardani is a small village in Khulo Municipality and belongs to the Skhalta community in the Adjara region, where only 16 families. Until now, in all of the sixteen families children-rich mother bustles around, and most of them have a three or more children. These women (and not only) were awarded with the title of โ€˜heroineโ€™ back in the USSR, for bearing and raising 10 or more children. Time passed and out of 12 mother โ€˜heroinesโ€™ only 9 lives on. The youngest, Sonia Makharadze, is 68 years old. She has 13 children and 25 grand-children. As the youngest granny of the Zegardeni, she is looking forward to her great-grandchildren. The eldest mother โ€˜heroineโ€™, Emine Shainidze, is 87 years old. She has 11 children, 40 grandchildren, and 61 great-grandchildren.

Guliko Makharadze, 73 years old, is also a child-rich woman. She has raised 14 children and 27 grandchildren in the village. She still feels good and helps her daughter-in-law to raise 5 great-grandchildren.

People in Zegarden mostly follow agriculture. They cultivate corn and beans, but not in average numbers or quality. โ€œBefore, we had a productive harvesting, that was our livingโ€ฆ it is nearly eight years we do not harvest enough and what we yield is not in a good condition: in two months of harvesting corps worsen, beans tooโ€, - regrettably, says mother โ€˜heroineโ€™ of 11 children, Venera Shainidze. Her firstborn is 47 years old and youngest 27. She has 28 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. Nowadays, 13 people lives in her family and their only financial income is Veneraโ€™s and her husbandโ€™s pension: 300 GEL. Mother Venera has a lot to think about, but her youngest concerns her the most: โ€œI have two daughter-in-laws at home, we live three couples together (me and my husband, two sons with their wives), and third son needs to be settled down as well, but how can I bring third daughter-in-law here with other two? We donโ€™t have any space left at home and no other possibility to live separately. He is already 27 years old and needs his family, and wants his own nestโ€ฆโ€

The village has a lot of problems: school (Zegardani only has a primary school, after the 4th grade, children go to the school in neighboring village), limited lands, landslides, unemployment, lack of medical care and transportation issues. There doesnโ€™t exist any places for sporting either. In Zegardani, people start talking about problems with the lack of transport: โ€œIf we need to go to the region or in a town, we need to walk 5 km, to the village Tsabliani. When we return from there, we might give some extra money to the driver and he brings us to the place. Here we had a mini-bus for the school children, picking them in the morning to school and after the lessons driving back home. Now what happened we donโ€™t know, the mini-bus does not drive anymore! When we ask driver why, he says he was told from Tbilisi not to work anymore, as they could not finance him any longer. Who told him, he doesnโ€™t say. Five km is a long way for a schoolchild. And we are afraid of spine curvature disorders children might develop by taking that heavy bag with them in such a long way.โ€

Zegardani knows lasting and snowy winters. Locals say they do not need stairs to get into their houses, as the snow hits the balconies. Youngsters, tired with boredom, cannot visit their neighbors in this weather. Whiles the only fun they can have in this mountainous village is to come together and play joker, backgammon, dominos. In the winter, they ski and compete in table tennis in the school of another village.

Guliko sticks to wood (wood is the only thing that is not a problem in the village) stove in winter and names the main problem to be absence of a hospital: โ€œlast year I almost lost my daughter-in-law, neighbors saved her. They placed the pregnant woman on a stretcher and took her to Skhalta with their hands. We have ambulance in Skhalta, but they are not even equipped with drugs like Analgin or Dimedrol. Long before, there was a great hospital we had and our health was in a good condition too. This gorge urgently needs a hospital!โ€

The spring is extremely beautiful in village Zegardani. Plums start to blossom and thereby, you can see stunning sparkle of the snow on the sunโ€™s rays. The land is creeping and when spring, snow melts and landslip process emerges. People of Zegardani, till now, remember April 19, 1987, when the landsliade in the village Tsabliani killed dozens of locals. Recalling this unpleasant past, Zegardanies come to tears and regrettably repeat the promise government gave them that time: โ€œeveryone received the document, that we are living in a landslide danger zone. Promise was given to build cheap houses and resettle us in lowlands, but nobody remembers that. Every spring we meet with a fear, but we have nowhere to goโ€ฆโ€

Regardless the harsh conditions, elder people of Zegardani are not willing to leave the place. โ€œWe were born and grown here, spilled our sweat in this land and we cannot go anywhere, we will be buried here!โ€ They ask for more attention from the local government: โ€œbefore, they at least remembered us for motherโ€™s day, inviting us in the center, giving us present. This government has forgotten about us, our gold medals lost their price!โ€

In the village Zegardani people believe, that locals are most vulnerable, but officially only six families are granted with the social status. As young people have no opportunities for employment, they go to Turkey tea picking for the season. Badri Shainidze, 45, takes care of his family in the same way: โ€œTurkey is our bread-winner. We collect tea there for the whole summer, to save our families. The most I have earned on a season is 3000 GEL, but it is impossible to use it for the whole year. We need a stable work!โ€

Spring nearly approaches in Zegardani. Locals already start preparing for the spring works. And then mother โ€˜heroinesโ€™ head to the fields with their grandchildren, young boys continue to collect tea in Turkey, and their sons and daughters will take care of the villageโ€ฆ

Hi!

@Teona I donโ€™t know how I managed to miss this post. Thank you for sharing the story with us, it sounds somewhat familiar as there are villages in my country (Romania) where, too, there are no roads and children walk kilometres to schoolโ€ฆ

Do you have family in Zegardani? Do the youngest in the village ever finish school and manage to move out to a better connected place and make a life for themselves?

Sorry!

Yes, it was accidentally gone unnoticed for a while and it was in Georgian, I hadnโ€™t seen it either until Mathias told me about it. So, I translated it, guess thatโ€™s another reason we didnโ€™t see it before. Anyway, Teona, yes, what Neomi writes is very interesting. I am also wondering, are there any ways in which they are trying to find to sustain for themselves? Thanks!

can we visit

hey @Teona

among with the above questions . is it near to Tbilisi can we invite someone from the village to the event in June , can we have a visit or can the georgian futurespotters make a visit for it and see how can we help . @Inge

In Egypt also as we have a very centralized country so outside Cairo and the big cities one can find villages with huge infrastructure problems also so It would be helpful to share ideas
