Futuremakers in Rustavi: day 2 of our visit

Anne looks around with excitement. The 20 something from Rustavi has a lot to share and is happy to be in a room with a diverse group of people from her hometown Rustavi, an industrial city in Georgia, merely 20 minutes driving south of the capital Tbilisi.

The city, wide avenues and grey, tall, Soviet building blocks, was founded and flourished during Soviet times. Now, Anneโ€™s hometown is struggling with a mostly commuting population, and disappearing cohesive communities.

But that didnโ€™t stop Anne to push for improvements in the past few years. The petite lady - with her raven black hair, false eyelashes to accentuate her big eyes, and heels higher than I can ever imagine walking on - does not look like your typical activist, but already initiated several different projects to improve her city.

โ€œI want to show the people in my city new things,โ€ Anne says proudly, explaining that her and her friend collected books from people in her city and the region around it, to donate them to the cityโ€™s prison. โ€œOne guy even gave his whole library!โ€ she says with her eyes lighting up when talking about the experience.

Volunteering is not a usual practise in Georgia, with most people volunteering only at the countryโ€™s largest religious institution, the Georgian orthodox church. According to the 2015 Caucasus Barometer, an annual cross country survey in Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Georgia, only 21% of Georgiaโ€™s population volunteered without compensation (http://caucasusbarometer.org/en/cb2015ge/ACTVLNT/). Although in 2013 this was only 14%, the number is still quite low.

However, Rustavi seems to be an exception. After having worked and lived in and out of Tbilisi for the past 10 years, I am happily surprised to encounter various different people in Rustavi working to make their city a better place without receiving any kind of compensation for it.

But as a result, we realize during our 2 day visit to this interesting city, most of the people who work on projects, are mostly worried they can not secure financing to actually implement their projects. Or they are asked by several large NGOs and donor organizations, to work for free on a daily basis.

โ€œI am already to busy with my own projects,โ€ one student at Rustaviโ€™s Rvali University tells us annoyed, not realizing that we are here to find out what it is they are working on, instead of asking them to work for free for our own projects.

But when we dig a little bit deeper, not only during our visit, but also through online outreach, we find that many of them are either working on an improved urban landscape, or have many ideas on how to make Rustavi a liveable, cohesive city. From creating bicycle lanes, to making the city more colorful, to book sharing in the park, to reviving the cityโ€™s soccer fan club.

โ€œI believe that it will deepen the solidarity and social consciousness,โ€ Ninca, who became a member of the fan club a few years ago, writes on our newly founded facebook group Futuremakers Rustavi. โ€œ[It] will give us an amazing opportunity to create one organized and mobilized community,โ€ Ninca writes.

And during our workshop on the second day of our visit, where we meet among others the young Anne, it is inspiring to see the ideas the group - ranging from Rotary members, to scouts, to a representative of the taxi driversโ€™ union, to political science students, to ordinary citizens - come up with to revive the cityโ€™s centrally located and old park. And most can be done with little resources.

โ€œTheir is no safe crossing to the park, not even a Zebra,โ€ a girl active with the scouting group says, adding that the road, on which cars often speed, could perhaps get obstacles to discourage speeding.

Other ideas voiced during our workshop are to make the park more colorful, to add hammocks, to create a reading and book-sharing space (in an old train compartment or bus), to add removable chairs and tables to a patio on the lake, to create an outdoor game area, and to utilize the large lake by introducing boats.

And brainstorming about these ideas did not only result in interesting possible future changes to the city, but it also was a great experience for people who not know each other, to understand their city and community is more lively and exciting than they thought it was.

โ€œI am meeting so many inspiring people here today,โ€ a taxi driver and human rights activist tells us, โ€œwith these kind of people we can really make a change.โ€

On glorified volunteering

Thanks for reporting @Inge!

While in Rustavi, I attended the meetings and workshop last week and was not surprised at all that some of the young people who show up have tried their hand at more than one civic volunteerism activity - it seems volunteering in its classic use of the term is often institutionalised. That can be great for socializing people into social good, causes to fight for and others, but it is not so great providing longer term outlooks in terms of opportunity building for yourselfโ€ฆ

Over the past years working in the region Iโ€™ve seen many young people are donating their time to activities we would normally not think of as volunteering: social startups, social enterprises, digital campaigns, market activism. Edgeryders past research also made it clear that:

โ€œIt is evident that there is considerable disparity between how value is perceived within the current norms of the labour market, formal education, and local or regional government, and in the ways in which [young people] want to contribute - and are contributing - to society. [They] are, instead, creating and working within their own regimes of value - whether that is innovating new ways of learning or meeting their material needs through barter. (The Edgeryders guide to the future)

I think the value which Future Makers aims to build falls within this ambition of creating new livelihoods, figure out how youth can make a contribution that has returns for society and for their own personal future (!) and not volunteering for a project.
